Mátyás Zalán

My name is Mátyás Zalán, I live in Cristuru Secuisec with my parents and my sister. Currently I am studying in Berde Mózes Unitarian High School, am a tenth grader with Natural Sciences specialization. I have been playing football for 7 years, and I have been interested in theatre since fifth grade. I consider myself a perfectionist; I try to do my best in order to achieve the best.
Q: Last year your school record was 10. Your parents must be proud of you.
Mátyás Zalán: Yes, they are proud of me, as well as I am. They always told me that I learn for myself and not for others. I owe them a lot, especially for my mother, and for my teacher, Gálfalvi Sándorn. I learnt a lot from him, he not only taught, but educated as well.
In 9th grade I spend much more time studying than before. I think that the result is visible. Unfortunately because of this I could not help my parents in the village, as during the weekends I either played football or learnt. I would like to change this, but without having any effect on my results. I would like to spend a bit more time on other activities.
Q: You also take part in competitions, achieving good results…
Mátyás Zalán: During high school I wanted to try myself out in various situations. The same thing happened with the competitions as well; I wanted to participate on as many of them as possible. I took part in Biology, Mathematics, Hungarian and English competition, and I could also have the battle of wits with other students in Computer Science. I was able to participate on the county level, apart from Biology, in spite of the fact that Biology was what I wanted the most. This year I will try to study a bit more, and to achieve better results on county level as well.
Q: Besides studying so much, do you have time for entertainment?
Mátyás Zalán: To be honest, I also have time for entertainment. I have three football trainings a week, and in the weekends we have football matches with teams from HarghitaCounty. I also spend some time with my friend, but only when I have a lot of free time which happens very rarely. Fortunately I have some good friends in my class with whom I can spend more time.
Q: You take part in an English theatre group…
Mátyás Zalán: Yes, it is true. I started to participate in the Kalamajka theatre group when I enrolled at this high school. I remember the words of my teacher, Gálfalvi Sándor: “You have colour son, but your brain is missing!” regarding this I think I proved him, as well as for myself. This theatre group was disbanded so in 7th grade I became a member of the English Drama Club. The first play in which I was the leading man was Love actually. This play was about a young boy, Sam, who falls in love for the first time and he doesn’t have the courage to tell this for the girl. The action has got many plots going on, and a few things happen until he tells her that he is in love. It is a very sweet and funny play, which had great success. The next year I couldn’t participate on the rehearsals so I didn’t get a role in the play. Last year I could take part again, and I am the leading man in the play entitled The weirdest honeymoon ever.
Q: You do your activities on different levels. Which activity gives you the most?
Mátyás Zalán: The football gives me the most. I think it fulfils me; it helps me let steam off. It is a very good team building activity; it improves my capability to decide correctly in seconds.
Q: Actor or footballer? How do you see yourself in ten years’ time?
Mátyás Zalán: Neither really. I like to do both, but I don’t plan earning the daily bread out of these jobs. For a very long time I wanted to become a footballer, but I changed my mind, now I consider studying a better option for a more secure future.
Q: In your play (the play of life) what kind of role would the foundation get?
Mátyás Zalán: The support of the foundation means a lot to me. It helps my parents a lot, because they won’t have to spend so much on me during university, because in a few years my sister will start thinking about serious things, and she could use their support. It also helps me to believe that I am someone; I have to study hard and not to give up my dreams.
